Free products should not use a "checkout" but look turly free.

I'm trying to use free products and free communities to attract people to the page. However, when I do this, people get confused by the checkout process, mistaking it for the beginning of a transaction rather than a truly free product. If you can make free products appear truly free, without any dollar signs or indications of purchasing, that would help. But, if you could eliminate the idea of transactions altogether for free products, that would really be a game-changer for marketing.
I don't want people going through any checkout process ideally. I just want them to be able to access it by making an account. This would resolve so many issues faster for anything that's free.

It would be useful to record what freebies the student opens for targeted marketing/emailing and for statistics.

I agree .. I think communities are a great marketing tool and at the moment the path to them is too clunky .. but more on that later . Re accessing free products the only catch is that if they don't need to do anything you don't get their email ... if they aren't a member of your site there does need to be some process for their first product. So maybe a way to make that simpler .. just their name and email ?
